Filming in Dubrovnik continues today for Game of Thrones season 5.

The past two days of filming in the Croatian city have been well-documented by photographers, and it looks as though today will be no different. Dubrovniknet.hr has provided some images of today’s filming on what appears to be a market set in the streets surrounding the Church of St. Ignatius and the Jesuit Complex.

Spoilers below the cut.

The website notes that (at time of publication – early morning) none of the main cast have been sighted, but plenty of extras and crew members were milling about.

UPDATE: Kit Whelan of Seek New Travel has confirmed some details about today’s scene. Members of the Faith Militant were seen storming the pictured tavern area, where they threw extras around and spilled ale. It seems the scene will serve to show just how serious, devout, and uncompromising the Faith Militant are.

These following images once more reinforce that an incredible amount of work goes into creating authentic props for the show.

Below is the woman who people were guessing was playing Barsena Blackair (she has the same pouch around her waist in both pics). It looks like she’s definitely just a crew member.

The image of the man below gives us a clearer look at the Seven-Pointed-Star head-carving that’s a feature of the show’s version of the Sparrows/Faith Militant. He’s also holding some sort of crude scepter or club… a Poor Fellow, perhaps?

The following two images (the first from Dalmacija News) both show the entrance to the set.

This tweet confirms that this scene will presumably take place in episode 5.04, meaning Mark Mylod was the director at the helm of filming today (and possibly yesterday).

  1. Everything looks so great! The sets, the extra’s costumes and hairtyles/make-up. What I find amazing in GoT are the costumes, most of the medieval costumes in movies/tv shows don’t look authentic at all, they look like if they’re brand new, that’s not the case here!

  2. The crew member mistaken for Barsena Blackair should be on the show. I thought she was part of the cast when I first saw her. She has a very distinctive look that stands out.

Thank you for these great pictures – so exciting to see Season 5 coming together.

  3. I love these old guys!! They look so enthusiastic. I try to imagine what lives they must have had to lead them to flee bottom. That’s so awesome. I want to have every one of these older extras over for a barbeque and hear all of their stories.

  4. I know this is relatively pointless but do they use real fruit on the set? Would make sense and they could let the extras chow down on it when they’re done!

  5. Balerion The Cat,

I can’t remember which video it was exactly, fairly sure it was one of the season 1 “Making of” or Artisan videos, but they discuss that in it. They shot some test footage, with some freshly made costumes… and it looked terrible. The costumes looked brand new, they stood out and had no authenticity. They looked like costumes made for a TV show, rather than clothes that would have been worn in that sort of place. So they had the costumers (or it was the costumers idea to) age all of the outfits, make them look worn, sweat stains, dirt etc. Is also why the costumes don’t get washed between seasons.

  6. Matt,

I had that thought too at first, but I think they’re to different in hight and style to be part of the same set of pawns in a game.

  7. Looks like we’re getting an inquisition montage, I hope it’s paired with some snazzy music.

    Sounds like a mid-season sequence

  8. TheTouchOfFrost,

I read somewhere she was still on her comedy tour through September. I feel ya though, any bit of GoT news from her (or general Ironborn hints) would be just the fix I need right now.

  9. This doesnt seem rainy, foggy or cold at all. Maybe they are extending the seasons so winter comes in at the end of season 7?

  10. Maybe it’s the smallfolk who can’t afford to eat, and not the smallfolk who can afford to drink in taverns, that the Faith Militant and that get their support and numbers from. It’s the sparrows, the refugees from the wars outside KL, that are following the High Sparrow. And, they are Religious zealots… if the smallfolk are drinking and whoring (i.e., sinning) do we think they’ll let that go, because they’re smallfolk? IIRC they don’t take any notice of social position… they’ll treat high-born and low-born the same. Or, maybe there’s a specific reason that tavern is being targeted… who it belongs to, who’s drinking there, maybe the patrons have been insulting the Faith.

  11. Lion of Night,

Ahhh ok. Although I’ll take the news that she finishes her tour at the end of September to mean she has to because she needs to shoot for GoT in October! 🙂

  12. Bananas:
These people are lightly dressed for (in the books) late Fall. Even in Kings Landing …

True, but well, they’re poor. I doubt they have the money or means to get warmer things. Sadly, many of them will die when Winter really arrives full force.

  13. jentario: Looks like we’re getting an inquisition montage, I hope it’s paired with some snazzy music.

    “The In-quis-i-tion (what a show)/
    The In-quis-i-tion (here we go)”

  14. TheTouchOfFrost,

Completely baseless speculation, but with it looking like there’s going to be no material on the Islands, her only role would be in the North, which would make sense for filming later in the year once it’s cold.

  15. Afeastfordances,

Possibly, although surely they have to

    kill Balon this season

so there’s potential to be at least a little Iron Island action. Personally, I’d like there to be much more but I guess the Greyjoys look like they’re going to be neglected.

  16. Gemma will probably shoot at least one scene with Patrick Malahide. Of course we’ll never find out cos those are interior scenes.

  17. GoT Prop and costume department greatness alive and well, as always, Kudos to those gals and guys.

OT: A great Spaghetti Western Cover of GoT Theme now on YT. Don’t know if anyone has posted it before.

  18. TheTouchOfFrost,

I wondered that myself. Seems like a waste if they do, but can they do fake food that looks real?

Also wondered about taking photos of these settings – I would assume that photographers would respect the security guards direction, correct? Not just because of spoilers, or even safety of cast and crew, which is very important. But these are actors who are trying to do a job. Id assume photograhers would be a distraction (or not? Ive never seen a scene done outside before)

  19. Greenjones,

So it’s from the fourth episode, directed by Mark Mylod. Interesting. I guess this storyline will kick off when Jaime is gone, and Cersei will have to deal with this.

  20. Balerion The Cat,

Mylod was visible in one of the pictures but I don’t recall having seen confirmation of it being in 504 (though of course I could’ve missed that). Good to know now that it is. So far 504 is the episode that we know the most about for s5.

  21. Yes. That slate picture is our first real confirmation that this is 504. Mylod seems to be visible in these pics too (I think), he’s the guy with sunglasses on behind the old man sitting at the table midway through.

  22. TheTouchOfFrost,

It would make sense for her to initially go back to Pyke right? IIRC, in 3×10 she tells Balon she’s going to look for Theon and in 4×06 her mission fails, so presumably she’d head back home? Not to mention we need resolution from the leeches scene! One can only hope!

  23. Greenjones,

The episodes are starting to shape up. Looks like the rearming of the Faith and Jaime going to Dorne will be focus points of that episode, and we already know that Dany’s rumored execution scene and Tyrion at the brothel (probably meeting Jorah) are in episode 5.
  24. Lion of Night,

If they want to abridge all that though, it would be easy enough to say that she went back to Deepwood because she doesn’t want to go home empty-handed after making such a big deal of defying her dad to do this rescue. Then she could just find out about Balon’s death and her uncle’s return secondhand, like how it’s originally conveyed in the book. From a production standpoint, that cuts a few scenes they need to film, saves them the trouble of maintaining the Pyke set, avoids any special effects needed for the bridge scene, and saves them from having to cast any characters who would maybe appear in that scene until at least next season.
  25. Afeastfordances,

Oh, but we must see who killed Balon! That would be the ultimate spoiler for all! Right up there with Jon’s fate, WW babies and fAegon.

Then again, it might just be the wind….[yawn]

  26. I’m not digging the black robes for the Faith Militant. As much as the producers worry about confusing the casual viewers, I’m surprised they weren’t concerned about people thinking they are a part of the Night’s Watch.

  27. Tyrion Pimpslap,

I doubt anyone will confuse them with the NW. We’ll likely have enough exposition on the Sparrows and the Faith Militant etc. that casual viewers will get the gist about them.

If they were to be confused with anyone, it would be more likely that they would be with Maesters since they both wear chains over their robes.

  28. ash,

I’d just get real food. Seems a bit daft taking the time to make fake.

    Lion of Night,

    Afeastfordances,

If they set up the Greyjoy stuff for Season 6 with just a scene or two this season then it won’t be a complete loss but I think

Balon’s death should be given some prominence by being shown. It’s not as if it would be a massive ball ache to film and a little hint bit of mystery as to who killed him would stir some interest in the Iron Islands plotline.
  29. Not that there was any doubt Natalie Dormer was going to be in S5, but her UA details confirm she is currenly shooting for Season 5 of GoT. I hope they update other returning actors’ details soon, too. Unfortunately, there is currently no info about which directors she is working with this year.
