With the dropping of the poster, pics and trailer in quick succession, the Game of Thrones promotional deluge has begun and shows no signs of slowing! Today, Entertainment Weekly revealed their special collector’s set of covers for their next issue, featuring the surviving members of House Stark. Sophie Turner, Kit Harington, Maisie Williams and Isaac Hempstead Wright will all grace the cover of the magazine’s June 2/9 edition (available May 30th), each on a solo cover and all together for one heart-stopping family photo cover.

In addition to the five cover photos, the magazine has published a series of bubbly behind-the-scenes photos featuring the four actors hanging around the set. There’s nothing too revealing besides their beautiful costumes, but any photo where a Stark kid looks healthy and happy is a good thing in my book! The photos are EW exclusives so mosey on over to their website to have a look at the lot!

You can purchase a set of all five EW covers, or your individual Stark choice on newsstands or  online now!

  1. This is too much 🙁 this gives me the feels. Let’s hope we will see them all reunited on the show. I would cry.

  2. Davos’ Luck:
Holy Hodor! After months of drought, this week has been like christmas.

Lol, that’s right! what will be tomorrow’s gift?

  3. Seeing this made me so happy! The photo of Sophie and Maudie hugging is too much! But what’s that Targaryen guy doing in there? Only kidding; Jon will always be a Stark to me.

  4. is it just me or that dagger arya’s holding looks alot like the one that guy used to kill Bran back in season1?

  5. Sooooo beautiful. I need to buy this edition of the magazine when it comes out.

Yay for House Stark reunion! Yay for Jon and Arya. I really hope this is a sign that the two of them will reunite this season. 😍

  6. I love it when EW panders to me.Yes this is the most beautiful photoshoot they have ever made.My babies are back together.

  7. The Pack’s all together! The Stark kids have come a long way through the darkness, but they are lone wolves no more!

Even if it’s just for a promotional shoot, this is still great to see. Hopefully, that complete family reunion will be soon realized in the show as well. And while this point has been made many before, I have to reiterate it – those costumes are fantastic. As incredible as Dany and Cersei’s new looks are, I’d say House Stark as a collective unit can lay definitive claim to being the most stylish family in Westeros at this point, at least in my book. Couldn’t have foreseen that a few seasons ago.

  8. I just hope that my copy of EW has either Jon or Arya gracing its cover, or all four Starks together. With my luck, however, it’s unlikely to happen. 🙂

Just glad to see the Starks getting some more EW love! 🙂

  9. The costumes are amazing! And the pic of them all together gives me major feels.

  10. Before the series is over, we better have an Arya-Jon reunion where they hug the living daylights out of each other.

  11. Just finished my online order of the Arya and Stark Family issues. (The first time EW did the multi-cover GoT issues, our Barnes & Noble received only two different covers and I didn’t want to risk missing out on these).

BTW, for Star Wars fans out there, Vanity Fair is selling the upcoming SW issue (w/4 different covers) online.

  12. Yay.

I think the Jon/Arya reunion scene will be postponed until the final season, simply because fans want it sooooo badly.

  13. Kristy G.,

I just hope that my copy of EW has either Jon or Arya gracing its cover, or all four Starks together. With my luck, however, it’s unlikely to happen.

You can go to the EW link listed above and order individual covers ($5.99 plus $2.00 S&H).

  14. I was guessing that we’d get a photoshoot along these lines, though I was preparing myself for Isaac being left out in favour of a Stark Sisters-only shoot or something like that. But he made it in (though he’s the only one not smiling in these photos, for whatever reason).

These images are the best Sophie’s wig has looked in any BTS shots.

  15. SERIOUSLYYYYY

Ive said this in other threads and I am saying it again. my heart cant takeeeeeeeeee this week of GOT over load and NHL PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!! AHHH

  16. If the small amount of water leaking from my eyes from seeing these pictures is any indication, the reunions this season are going to make the Jonsa one pale in comparison.

I love the pictures of them in costume in the behind the scenes settings. So funny.

  17. I keep looking at them because seriously, they are the best thing and made an average day all around amazing.

I’m really glad they went with a full family shoot instead of just the three of them.

I also love Jon holding Arya in the group photo. Brings me back to the EW shoot they did together a couple of years ago.

  18. The wolves have come again…finally! I need to buy the Stark Family Reunion cover. I’ve waited a long time to see them together

    Dee Stark,

Dee, Good luck to your Senators tonight!

  19. keltia:
    Firannion,

    Happy Wear the Lilac Day!

And to you as well! The Glorious 25th of May! Let us never forget their heroic sacrifices on behalf of the short-lived People’s Republic of Treacle Mine Road.

Also, don’t forget your towel on Towel Day.

  20. “Expect massive dragons and even bigger battles (on sea and land). But the aspect that will have fans buzzing the most is who meets who this season. For the first time in the show’s history, all the main characters will be in Westeros — and most of them are itching to kill each other.”

    AHHHHHHHHHH
Who will meet who?? Dany and Cersei for sure… Tyrion and Cersei…
    O M G

  21. Sean C.:
Isaac…made it in (though he’s the only one not smiling in these photos, for whatever reason).

Perhaps Bran is (justifiably) nervous at having Arya standing next to him with her hand on the hilt of that particular dagger.

  22. Kristy G.:
I just hope that my copy of EW has either Jon or Arya gracing its cover, or all four Starks together. With my luck, however, it’s unlikely to happen.

I hate that I’m at the mercy of EW about which cover I receive in the mail. Like you, I want Jon, Arya, or the group cover. I’d be okay with Bran but, please Gods, don’t let me get the Sansa one!

I absolutely love the one where Kit is carrying Maisie!! I hope when Jon & Arya reunite we get to see Arya jump into his arms again, now that we know Kit can carry a fully grown Maisie. 😄

  23. Did no one notice that arya is carrying the ‘catspaw’ Valyrian steel dagger left on the hip?!

  24. HBO if you keep spoiling us this way with a new treat everyday, we are going to get withdrawal symptoms once this promotional blitz slows down.

I love love love this cover, my favorite so far!!

  25. My Starks are back, even if (for now) only on this cover. I can’t say why I’m crying while typing: is it the joy of anticipating their reunion in the show or the fear that their happiness won’t last?

  26. Arya is wearing the VALYRIAN STEEL dagger which was used in season 1 to try to kill Bran :O
She is going to take on some White Walkers for sure…

  27. Davos’ Luck:
Holy Hodor! After months of drought, this week has been like christmas.

I’ll say! The Long Night has ended. The deluge has begun: Photos, posters, trailers, interviews, magazine covers etc. now coming at us at a furious pace.

PS. Doesn’t Arya look great on the cover of EW? Maisie Williams is pure gold.

  28. The cover with the four Starks, without any text, would make an amazing poster.

Sansa looks gorgeous here, I don’t really see her wig look bad.

  29. BunBunStark,

    You read my mind:

I hate that I’m at the mercy of EW about which cover I receive in the mail. Like you, I want Jon, Arya, or the group cover. I’d be okay with Bran but, please Gods, don’t let me get the Sansa one!

I absolutely love the one where Kit is carrying Maisie!! I hope when Jon & Arya reunite we get to see Arya jump into his arms again, now that we know Kit can carry a fully grown Maisie. 😄” xx.

Now I’m conflicted: Do I roll the dice and hope that when my EW arrives in the mail, Arya or Jon is on the cover ? Or play it safe and plunk down the extra $$ to order them online ?

No slight against Sophie T intended, but I’ll be somewhat disappointed if with a Sansa cover.

  30. These photos are amazing! Now you can really see all of the details on their costumes, and it looks great.

  31. Ten Bears,

It’s so good that the photographer knew how to show Maisie’s personality.
I saw the photos on the computer, but I couldn’t find the one with Kit carrying Maisie on the first attempt. I don’t know what happens. The EW site doesn’t seem to show all the pictures all the time.

  32. Absolutely love these shots. Jon and Arya look particularly badass. Especially Maisie in her new outfit.

I wonder how Arya is going to end up with the Valyrian steel dagger?

Last time it was seen it was on Ned’s desk in King’s Landing. Might it have been returned with his bones to Winterfell?

Or did Littlefinger nab it after Ned got locked up? And Arya’s going to steal it back from Littlefinger after putting a sword through his eye and out the back of his skull?

  33. viki,

I am not an expert so I am probably missing something obvious. Why is her natural hair not an option? Asking as a fellow red head.

  34. So glad to see the surviving Starks together (well technically, I guess Jon is a Snow and only half Stark . . . quibble, quibble), but it made Rickon’s death even sadder. Onward. Can’t wait for the season to begin.

  35. It’s nice to see them all together, although I miss (not-so-)little Rickon. *sniff* I particularly like Bran’s and Sansa’s styles. Does she have little silver direwolves at the ends of this neck sausage thing? Nice detail. I also like that the Longclaw pommel sneaked into the picture 🙂

Apart from that, Jon Snow’s boring face just makes me wanna fall asleep every time. As for Maudie, is she gonna start an eyebrow contest with Emilia soon? 🙂 Anyway, I hope she considerably steps up her acting game this season. Some of last season’s scenes were really not good IMO.

  36. Ramsay’s 20th Good Man,
Yeah, her carrying the Valyrian steel dagger is very interesting. If they didn’t just think it looked cool for the photoshoot and she actually does get it that is. We can assume that she starts wearing this outfit late in the season since she’s got on the ratty cloak in the trailer. If she does attain the dagger will it be simply finding it and claiming it or does she do something to get it? Either way, Arya having one of the rare Valyrian weapons is super cool in my opinion! A small weapon like a dagger is something she would be excellent with as well. 🙂

  37. Shy Lady Dragon,

Yup. The photographers know how to show Maisie’s personality. Plus, she’s naturally photogenic.

It’s kind of funny: Just yesterday I was commenting on Cersei’s awesome outfit and wishing that Arya, after 6+ seasons of grunge, would get a new costume with a warrior princess look. And ….

Less than 24 hours later, I’m greeted with a photo spread featuring Arya in an amazing warrior Princess costume. I especially liked the second photograph with Arya seated on some kind of ledge, with Jon, Bran and Sansa standing next to her.
Arya’s riding boots, gold (?) pants and luxurious fur cape give her such a regal look.

I’m going to try EW site again to find that picture of Jon carrying Arya. For some reason the EW site often freezes or doesn’t load properly on my cell phone.

  38. Stark covers? Bran included? Awesome costumes, adorable behind the scenes pics, and more interviews to come? My brain can’t take all this awesomeness one day after the trailer. This is the kind of pandering I can get behind.

Keep it coming, HBO promo machine!

  39. Shy Lady Dragon,

On the 14th attempt, the EW site loaded the Jon-holding-Arya picture. How adorable !
    [* Asks self: “What’s swooning?”*]

And I’m sure it’s no coincidence that the hair stylists and costume designers for Kit and Maisie are making Jon and Arya look more and more like brother and sister.

  40. Clob,

Hey, thanks !!! Much easier to click on your link rather than wrestle with EW fickle site.

(Great picture, isn’t it. 😊 Thanks to you I can now look at it for more than a millisecond: the average time if takes for EW to freeze up and attempt to reload itself.)

  41. Tycho Nestoris:
    viki,

I am not an expert so I am probably missing something obvious. Why is her natural hair not an option? Asking as a fellow red head.

Her natural hair color is Blond, which she bleached her hair back to for a movie, the hair was too damaged to re-dye back to red as she usually does for GOT, thus the wig

  42. Vally,

As for Maudie, is she gonna start an eyebrow contest with Emilia soon? 🙂 Anyway, I hope she considerably steps up her acting game this season. Some of last season’s scenes were really not good IMO.

Having received a Best Supporting Actress Emmy nomination for her Season 6 work, it’s hard to imagine how Maudie/Maisie could “step up her acting game” any higher.

  43. Ten Bears,

Indeed, Arya, like Ygritte, wouldn’t know what “swooning” means.
I love to see her in Stark outfit, but it also makes me sad, thinking how much Ned would have been proud of her.

  44. No afraid to admit and shed a tear wathcing this cover of EW. Arya, Bran, Jon and Sansa together!

    Starks are back.

  45. Flayed Potatoes,

I just re-watched that scene to check and it’s a different dagger he uses on that occasion. So the whereabouts of the Valyrian steel blade is still unknown.

Although it’s a decent bet that Littlefinger got his grubby paws on it.

  46. Ramsay’s 20th Good Man,

I’m sure he got it back. He used a dagger on Ned when he got arrested. That could be the one.

Or the show might have changed the design for the season 4 dagger. It wouldn’t be the first time they’ve had continuity issues. I doubt most viewers remember how it looked like.

  47. Too many wonderful quotes here for me to respond individually.

Surely, Ned **was** proud of Arya. He knew her cleverness, her dedication, her determination, etc. At the last, he spotted his too-brave daughter at Baelor’s feet, hilt in hand. Realising she was preparing to run to his rescue and knowing what would happen to her, he shouted to Yoren to stop her. He’s was willing to die only after he saw she was safe.
One cannot ask more of an actor than to triumph over questionable material. In S6 that’s exactly what Maisie did despite some illogical and laggard moments in the script. Her skills at so many aspects of acting in S6 are surely what got her recognition from the Emmy nominators.
I’d be surprised if Arya didn’t pay the iron price for that dagger. In any case, I wager she puts it to good use. But I’d prefer she get Dark Sister. She’s romanticized that sword since childhood. Whereas Meera Reed keeping it seems wasteful. Meera is not endgame and won’t wield it against the Others.

I am in seventh heaven over the Stark photos.including Bran. I’ve subscribed to EW for years and never got the covers I wanted. Bah! But they all look sooooo good, red wig notwithsansing. I wonder if they were shot during the autumn when that Daily Mail paparazzo too photos of Winterfell characters in those costumes. Anyway, up till now, the show has made Arya look grubby, awkwardly-dressed, and plain. IMO Arya is an ugly duckling . She assumed she was ugly because (in the books) Sansa and Jeyne made fun of her, even though others compared her to LYanna the beauty. Finally finally finally, the show or EW is letting Maisie’s/Arya’s beauty shine forth. It’s high time our ugly duckling discovers she’s a swan. Can you imagine the look on Gendry’s face when he sees **this** Arya Stark?

EW site problems–could they be because fans are accessing it an such a rate that the server cannot handle it?

  48. Flayed Potatoes,

I just took a look at Season 1 and the dagger he carried on him that season and held to Ned’s throat seems pretty identical to the one he uses to smash Sansa’s necklace in Season 4 so, funnily enough, they’ve actually done pretty well with the continuity in that regard.

And it’s not the Valyrian steel dagger. That was still on Ned’s desk in the scene moments before they confronted Cersei/Joffrey. There’s no reason why Ned would have given it to him.

But having now said that, they’ll probably go and have him pull out the Valyrian dagger in Season 7 and say something like, “This is the dagger I held to your father’s throat when I betrayed him” just before he plunges it into Sansa’s heart, and undo all that continuity.

  49. Stark Raven' Rad,

    Great comments !

    • I had been wondering about Arya and Dark Sister ever since she told Tywin the story (gave him a refresher history lesson) about Visenya T. and her Valyrian steel sword she called Dark Sister. I wasn’t aware BookArya talked about that. I assumed it wasn’t a throwaway line in the show.

•. I wonder how Ned would feel if he could see his little girl six years later. When she told him in S1e3,
    “J wasn’t playing. And I don’t want to be a lady”… she wasn’t kidding.

•. I too am tickled that after six seasons of grunge and androgyny, Arya/Maisie’s beauty is finally being presented – and not in a frilly, subservient way, but as [what I call] a kickass warrior princess. She looks fabulous in those pictures !
No need to go to the multiplex to see a Wonder Woman.

    • Any detractors of S6 Arya should look to the director(s) or writers. Like you said, even with questionable material MW is great.
And all of her interactions with Essie Davis as Lady Crane were top notch.

    • I think the EW site, like many websites, is overloaded with pop up ads that overwhelms Java Script on many cell phones. I’ve always had problems with the EW site. This was the first time, however, that the first few of several images failed to load at all. Usually the freezing and crashing problems start after scrolling down from the first page or two. But what do I know …

  50. Maisie most definitely carrying a familiar looking dagger… Arya finally gonna get some Valyrian steel. Kinda wish it was Widow’s Wail but this particular dagger has some serious meaning to the Stark clan as well. Gonna be an EPIC season.

  51. Vally,

Seriously? Maisie nails everything. The only thing holding her back is amount of material. It’s gotta be a bit tough to display a lot when she’s not given a lot to say, but she routinely does it. She got an Emmy nom last season essentially for her emotional acting alone. She didn’t have lengthy lines of dialogue or even a great number of scenes to bolster her claim and was still recognized. If they give her a far beefier load she’ll handle it like a champ. Sorry, that sounds dirty, but you probably understand my meaning. 🙂

  52. viki,

Stop it with the hate crimes against the wig – you wiggist you!! Being serious a moment though, at one time (they might still be for all I know) the DVD commentaries for the earlier series of GoT were on YouTube and Michelle Fairley mentioned having her hair dyed, so it was her real hair. She also mentioned that she’d bumped into Conleth Hill (Varys) and he’d had his hair shaved earlier than he needed to that year.

  53. Stark Raven' Rad,

Thank you, I enjoyed reading your comment. Your reminder that Ned was proud of his amazing younger daughter in her childhood made me feel good, but what I meant was that Ned could see her as an adult, a deserving heir of Stark legacy. I know, could Ned seen adult Arya, there wouldn’t have been most of the story…

  54. Wow we really are getting spoiled, I’ve only just managed to go through the two trailer articles and now this.

Regarding the above, although this is only a few photos it clearly hints at a full Stark reunion this season and also manages to strenghten one of the awayforthelads leaks.

Now no leak discussion but anyone feel we could lose one of these four this season? If so, my money is on Sansa.

  55. Jon Snowed,

Please! No “leaks” references. Not even indirectly. 🚱🚱🚱🚱🚱 At the very least, please use spoiler coding.
Thank you in advance for your courtesy and cooperation.

  56. Stark Raven' Rad:

    ———
Hope you don’t mind that I reproduced your excellent commentary in full (except for the last para about EW site loading problems).

Following up on two of the points you raised:

    • I too interpreted Ned’s last look out over the crowd as his being resigned to facing death once he saw that Arya was safe. I still cannot rewatch that scene because even though Yoren’s pressing her head to his chest and blocking her view, the look on Arya/Maisie’s face is heartbreaking. Anyone who doubts Maisie’s talent should watch that scene — along with the S5 scene at the Braavos dock when she can’t bear to throw Needle in the water. Both are fantastic examples of wordless acting: conveying emotion through facial expressions and body language alone.
I also thought Maisie was superb in the S4e10 scene when she first meets Brienne + Pod: her attitude changes from apprehension to curiosity to relaxed amusement upon meeting an apparent kindred spirit…and then it all changes to glaring mistrust when The Hound appears and points out that Brienne’s got a sword w/ Lannister gold. Maisie seamlessly goes through the spectrum of emotions in the span of 2-3 minutes: just like she did in her S1e2 scene w/ Nymeria, Jon Snow & Needle.

    • There’s a part of me that would be content with ending my GoT experience with the publication of the EW Stark photographs. After years of enduring horrors and deprivation, the surviving kids are at the top of their game and look awesome. I’d be content with my own hokey, imagined ending.
Of course, I’m going to opt for self-flagellation and watch S7 & S8.

    • Finally, … [to be cont.]*

    * [Apologies…. Didn’t mean to ramble on like this, and can’t edit or condense. ]

  57. Shy Lady Dragon:
    Stark Raven’ Rad,

Your reminder that Ned was proud of his amazing younger daughter in her childhood made me feel good, but what I meant was that Ned could see her as an adult, a deserving heir of Stark legacy. I know, could Ned seen adult Arya, there wouldn’t have been most of the story…

In GRRMland theres 7 hells so maybe theres 7 heavens too, and Ned is watching them from the top one. He’d be surprised and thrilled how his baby girl matured into a formidable and controlled warrior and protector of the innocent. He’d be puzzled by her FM powers but relieved she uses them in good causes. He’d be surprised and thrilled about Jon, who he sacrificed so much for. He prolly espected jon to become Lord Commander but not his realease by temporary death and later rising to be KITN. Hed be friggin shocked at Bran being an Old God. Only Sansas turned out as expected, beautiful and naive about alot but more politically clever. But if he could, Ned would come back to put the fear of god into her for cosying up to his betrayer and learning lessons from him, etc.
Theres alot of talk about aryas costume. It was in the “Aaaargh’ HBO promo. This poor kid never got to choose her clothes to express herself. Her mom, Yoren, the Hob&w chose every costume, tho she chose the right duds for Dancing lessons. Even that raggedy getup we see on her while shes on that horse in the Trailer look like scraps she scrounged from the closets at the Twins. Now shes declared herself a warrior queen and looks it to a T. Hot damn!

  58. Abel,

I do believe that our existence doesn’t end when we die (of course, I have no idea what follows), but I’m not so sure about Martinverse, as GRRM is, as far as I know, agnostic. Maybe the Seven and The Book of Seven Pointed Star are only mythology, nothing has been shown differently. The Lord of Light’s powers were proven when Beric, and then Jon, were resurrected, but Jon stated that he had encountered only nothingness.
I wish you were right and Ned could see his children from the Seven Heavens. Or, being a Northener, from the Old Gods’ variant of Walhala.

  59. robert,

I noticed it as well. How did she get it???
I see the she has her hand on the handle in the shots you can see it. Are they kinda hiding it or showcasing it?

  60. Karen:
So glad to see the surviving Starks together (well technically, I guess Jon is a Snow and only half Stark . . . quibble, quibble), but it made Rickon’s death even sadder. Onward. Can’t wait for the season to begin.

Technically, they are all half Stark.

  61. Abel,

    Shy Lady Dragon,

    Stark Raven' Rad,

About how Ned would react to Arya’s Warrior Princess/Warrior Queen look in these photographs…

I can’t help but think back to Ned’s talk with Arya about her future in S1e4:

Ned (smiles, puts arm around Arya): “You will marry a high Lord and rule his castle. And your sons shall be knights and princes and lords. ”

Arya: “No. That’s not me.” (Resumes balancing on stairs on one toe)

I look at the photographs of Arya as a young woman six years later with a confident, self/assured visage, decked out in warrior princess garb, and my inner fanboy imagines her announcing to her dad: “THIS is me.

[Didn’t mean to get carried away with my Aryaphilic fascination. I’m more excited by the Stark kids photographs than the trailer. ]

  62. Kristy G.:
I just hope that my copy of EW has either Jon or Arya gracing its cover, or all four Starks together. With my luck, however, it’s unlikely to happen. 🙂

Just glad to see the Starks getting some more EW love! 🙂

I get this in the mail. Had the exact same thought. I got Sansa solo. 😑 Boooooo.

  63. Ten Bears:
    Grail King,

Whew! I’m glad I’m not the only one who saw the Bolton flayed man crosss pattern in Sansa’s dress.

Those are diamonds. Besides, why would she wear Bolton sigils?

  64. Bearded Onion: Those are diamonds. Besides, why would she wear Bolton sigils?

If she is the only surviving heir of House Bolton, there may be some political expedience (in terms of uniting the North) in Sansa assuming her rightful place as Lady of the Dreadfort – especially once Bran turns up still alive to reclaim lordship of Winterfell. He may fully intend to go back to living in a tree when the war is over, but there could be strategic reasons for the Starks to position their cyvasse pieces on the board thusly in the short term.

  65. Pigeon: “You can’t kill me. I’m a part of you now.”

I quite enjoyed that line. And she watched the hungry dogs feed on their master. Sansa the budding sadist.

  66. Hodors Bastard: I quite enjoyed that line. And she watched the hungry dogs feed on their master. Sansa the budding sadist.

I think she’s following her father’s words : who passes the sentence should swing the sword. If you would take a man’s life, you owe it to him to look into his eyes and hear his final words. And if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the man does not deserve to die.”

  67. Pigeon: “You can’t kill me. I’m a part of you now.”

Found the wolves on Sansa, small on corner of her collar, fur covers them in all but one photo.

  68. Ten Bears,

No need to go to the multiplex to see a Wonder Woman.

Oh believe me, nothing is going to stop me from seeing that!

I am beyond excited with that cover and cannot wait for the show. Started on Season 4, lots of things I forgot,so its almost like watching a new season! But no its not the same….July can’t come soon enough~

  69. Grail King: If you would take a man’s life, you owe it to him to look into his eyes and hear his final words.

I find it fascinating that Sansa must balance those paternal teachings with the madness of three socio/psycho-paths who have convoluted her journey through this tale. Was her gaze solely the result of her father’s words or is she showing possible signs of Stockholm Syndrome?

  70. Ten Bears:
    Stark Raven’ Rad,

    Great comments !

    • I had been wondering about Arya and Dark Sister ever since she told Tywin the story (gave him a refresher history lesson) about Visenya T. and her Valyrian steel sword she called Dark Sister. I wasn’t aware BookArya talked about that. I assumed it wasn’t a throwaway line in the show.

I had a thought on that, as I too always wanted Arya to end up with the sword – seemed fitting, but she is also so associated with Needle at this point, I would hate to have her choose – the dagger makes for a nice compromise as she gets Valyrian steel and can keep Needle.

As for Dark Sister, I was thinking who would it go to if Meera doesn’t keep it, she isn’t really that kinda of (trained) fighter, so I don’t really expect for her to keep it or fight with it in any battles to come. So… it is originally a Targaryen sword, I’m sure their dragon motifs are all over it… so how about it ends up back in Dany’s hands – a gift of solidarity from the Starks to her. It is what Ned would (and did) do in a similar situation. Dany would in turn offer it to her #1 fighter Greyworm, and then he could really do some damage to those WW!

  71. Ten Bears:

I just recently watched her Doctor Who episode, I don’t typically watch the show but I decided to see it because of Maisie. I guess it was a typical episode, wasn’t too into it, Doctor Who just doesn’t do much for me personally, but I mention it because Maisie’s last scene is just a fabulous example of wordless acting. Even though it has been a while, I guess it is still a spoiler so

her character is basically given immortality, and the last scene is basically just Maisie’s reflecting centuries of her life in like less than a minute. From the joy and novelty of the adventure, and enjoying it, to the despair of seeing everyone you love die over and over again, to complete and utter apathy. I thought it was really well done.
  72. This photoshoot is truly beautiful, they all look so good together and I adore seeing them in modern settings.

I love all their costumes. Sansa’s outfit looks similar to when she was in The Vale with Littlefinger especially with that chain attached to that circle but a winter version also quite a few people have pointed out that the pattern on her dress looks very similar yo thr Bolton Sigil the flayed men and she also has coat very similar to the one her mother wore, this is also the best I’ve seen her wig from all the S7 footage so far.
Bran (actually got some spotlight finally yay) looks quite similar as he did in S1, the buckles he has on the shirt are pretty such the same as S1, I gotta say the loose collar however makes him sorta look like a Vatican priest lol.
Jon looks basically the same as he did last season except for that armour plating around his upper chest with the cool twin Direwolves poor guy barely ever gets a costume change, lucky his do handsome
    .
Arya looks incredible, she is wearing brown padded leather just like Ned wore, she also is wearing her hair like Ned as well a half up hairstyle, like father like daughter and that is giving me massive feels 😭😭😭 Arya has a more practical cloak that will allow her to move around easier with her sword, she’s definitely had a lot of different styles but this is definitely my favourite.

I’ve noticed in all the pictures of Bran, he is leaning or sitting I don’t think they wanted it to be too obvious that Jon has two younger siblings aka Sansa and Bran both taller than him lol

I do however believe we won’t get a full on Stark reunion this season, some may reunite but they’ll save some for the final season. This will probably get people’s hopes up though seeing this cover and waiting for the four of them to be reunited only to have their hopes crushed at the end of the season when it doesn’t happen.

  73. Mel,

I’ve noticed in all the pictures of Bran, he is leaning or sitting I don’t think they wanted it to be too obvious that Jon has two younger siblings aka Sansa and Bran both taller than him lol

well, not sure Bran would be seen standing unless he was being held up. but your point is well taken 🙂

  74. Stark Raven' Rad:
But I’d prefer she get Dark Sister. She’s romanticized that sword since childhood. Whereas Meera Reed keeping it seems wasteful. Meera is not endgame and won’t wield it against the Others.

Great comments, as always. Question, though: I’m about to start re-watching S6 with Saner Half (first time he’s watched GoT), and don’t remember Meera having acquired Dark Sister. I made a comment about it on another recent post. Did I miss something major when watching S6 before???

  75. Wolfish: Great comments, as always. Question, though: I’m about to start re-watching S6 with Saner Half (first time he’s watched GoT), and don’t remember Meera having acquired Dark Sister. I made a comment about it on another recent post. Did I miss something major when watching S6 before???

I missed it too TBH. Several keener observers had noticed that while Meera didn’t have a sword when they arrived at the 3ER’s cave, when she and Bran rest and talk to Benjen near the Wall, there’s a sword resting against the tree. In the books, Brynden Rivers, a Targ bastard who is the last known possessor of Dark Sister, is the 3ER.

  76. Stark Raven’ Rad,

Remember when the Night King and his army attack the Three Eyed Raven’s cave, Meera picks up a sword from inside the opening to the cave when she runs back in to help Bran. She’s still carrying it when they narrowly escape the cave.

It would be pretty cool if it turned out to be Valyrian steel, especially Dark Sister. But I would have thought that if that was the case, they might have included a scene where, say, Leaf gave it to her and told her to use it to protect Bran. All of the Valyrian steel swords we’ve seen so far have been pretty loudly telegraphed as such.

And we should bear in mind that back in the Season 4 finale a couple of the wights that chased them into the cave and promptly fell apart were carrying swords. So it might just be a regular old sword that one of them was carrying.

  77. Stark Raven’ Rad,

    Ramsay’s 20th Good Man,

I do remember Meera picking up the sword now. The last time I watched the series was before I knew who the 3ER had been, though, so that explains why I missed the possible connection.

If it is indeed Dark Sister, there are all sorts of possibilities to consider about who might wield it!

  78. Jjddss: I get this in the mail. Had the exact same thought. I got Sansa solo. Boooooo.

Awww, sorry. I got my copy in the mail today (late, BTW, argh!) and I was happy to see Jon’s gorgeous face staring back at me – and relieved I did not get Sansa, lol. I really want the issue with all 4 Stark kids on the cover, though, so I may head down to Barnes and Noble soon to see if they have it.

  79. viki,

I hate to be that person Viki but she is actually in 4 episodes of that Dr Who season, the one you watched being the first.

  80. Isabelle:
another photo from the shoot – a very dashing King in the North!

I can’t recall seeing pix of Kit before where his hairline appeared to be gelled in such a way as to scream, ‘Look at my cool widow’s peak!’ Could this be significant?

The only references to a character’s having a pronounced widow’s peak in the books, as far as I remember, involved Oberyn and one or more of the Sand Snakes. Is this a trait caused by being born in Dorne or something? 😉

  81. Hodors Bastard,

    “Sansa the budding sadist”?

She should’ve given Ramsay the Full Theon first, then fed the dogs an “appetizer” before the main course.

    Bon Appetit!

  82. viki,

As AryaArya posted already, Maisie W is in 4 episodes of Dr. Who. You saw the first one, “The Girl Who Died.” The others are: “The Woman Who Lived”, “Face the Raven”, and “Hell Bent” (season finale).

    My grades of the episodes:

    The Girl Who… B
    The Woman Who… B+
    Face the Raven… C
    Hell Bent …. A

    _______________
I just got my EW from the mailbox, and I too saw Jon’s face on the cover. Although I wanted Arya, I just thanked the Old Gods and the New that I didn’t get you-know-who.

Meanwhile, my sister saw the picture of the 4 Stark kids w/Arya seated on a ledge, and exclaimed “I must have those boots! I want those slacks! I love those gloves!”

PS Now that I’ve got full sized photographs (and a magnifying glass) I remain convinced that Sansa’s dress has a Bolton flayed man pattern.

I will say that Sophie/Sansa looks good; she resembles Catelyn.

But Arya! ❤️ In that picture of Jon holding her in which they’re both laughing, they really DO look like brother and sister, just like they’re supposed to.

(Is it weird that I’m emotionally invested in a fictitious family??!)

  85. Stark Raven' Rad,

Re: Stark Raven Rad, 5/25/17, 8:25 pm comment – Excerpt below

SRR described Ned’s reaction to seeing Arya on the statue of Baelor, and his urgent plea to Yoren [S1e9] as follows:
    ****

“…..At the last, he spotted his too-brave daughter at Baelor’s feet, hilt in hand. Realising she was preparing to run to his rescue and knowing what would happen to her, he shouted to Yoren to stop her….”
    ****

I must confess I can’t bear to rewatch this scene again. (That’s how good Maisie was in it. The look on her face when her head is pressed against Yoren’s chest is heartbreaking.)

MY QUESTION is: When I watched it for the first time a while back, I was confused about whether Ned, seeing Yoren in the crowd, shouted “Baelor!” to him to (a) prevent his daughter from witnessing his public humiliation; (b) get her away from a frenzied crowd and generally volatile situation; (c) make sure she wasn’t recognized and detained by any Lannister partisans; or (d) stop her from rushing to the podium to try to “rescue” her dad – likely insuring her capture or worse.

SRR interpreted Ned’s intentions consistent with option (d). So did I, after I saw it a second time.

I just want to confirm that this is the consensus: Ned’s intent was to insure Arya wouldn’t impulsively dash to the stage in a virtual kamikazi mission to try to rescue her father.

    Thank you for any comments.
