Probably a surprise to no one, but still welcome news- House of the Dragon has officially been renewed by HBO for a second season! The Game of Thrones spinoff premiered to massive ratings last Sunday, the largest audience for any new original series in HBO history. The series premiere broke European records as well. According to the network, the first episode “The Heirs of the Dragon” has now been seen by over 20 million viewers.

HBO executive VP Francesca Orsi says of the renewal, “We are beyond proud of what the entire HOUSE OF THE DRAGON team has accomplished with season one. Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV. A huge thank you to George, Ryan, and Miguel for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two.”

I think we all knew the season 2 renewal was coming shortly, but it’s still great to see it happen, and so quickly. With HBOMax chopping so many shows after the Discovery merger and making some weird decisions, it’s good to see a calm path forward for House of the Dragon.

  1. I expected it, but I am relieved that it happened so quickly. Now I can just enjoy the rest of the season!

  2. This was always very likely, but I must admit, given the mess going on at Warner Bros, I did have SOME doubts. So this is a relief to hear.

  3. Good thing to announce it now, helps to keep the buzz going. This show might be(come) bigger than any of us dared dream!

  4. Good news. So what’s wrong with Netflix, that they still haven’t committed to a second season of Sandman, despite its being their #1 show in something like 80 countries? They can’t blame it on being in organizational/financial flux, if HBO is undergoing similar problems. The contrast is striking.

  5. I think the show’s success (aka money maker) plus it being on HBO proper, not MAX works in the shows favour (and ours too). The stuff being axed is all on and for the streaming service, at least so far.

That one baffles me too. It’s their biggest and most genuine success in forever.

  7. Firannion,

    From Neil Gaiman:

“Because Sandman is a really expensive show. And for Netflix to release the money to let us make another season we have to perform incredibly well. So yes, we’ve been the top show in the world for the last two weeks. That still may not be enough.”

Apparently, it also matters how many people finish watching the show vs. how many people start watching the show.

You’d think Netflix would want to keep it’s most successful shows around. Seems like they could take season 2 elsewhere if Netflix isn’t willing to renew it.

  8. Maybe not the best idea to insult the company (weird decisions) when one is looking for a job for many years.
