Game of Thrones S4 box set tops US charts as well

Season-4-Game-of-Thrones-Blu-rayAfter the record-breaking news from the UK, we now have a nugget concerning season four box set sales Stateside.

Variety reports that Game of Thrones: The Complete Fourth Season is toping both of its sales charts for the week of release. That is, it sold more Blu-rays than any other show OR movie, and more home video (Blu-ray and DVD combined) than the competition.

The rest of the top 5 are all new releases of movies, not shows. 54% of the Thrones sales in the first week came from Blu-ray, which was thus slightly preferred over the DVD edition. Unfortunately, official absolute numbers of copies sold have not been reported.

You’re going to help me walk again?
    You will never walk again.

    E03 – Jamie: “I don’t care.”
    E10 – Cersei: “I don’t care.”

Good for the blu-ray. Now where’s season 5 trailer 2 and my extended extended commentary for Breaker of Chains? All men must durrr.

  2. Interesting that GoT as a TV show is competing with Movies

Plus also that people are buying Blu-Ray more than the cheaper DVD version

Reckon it has to be that people enjoy it so much they want to watch it in the highest quality available.

That’s certainly my reason for preferring Blu Ray over DVD at least

  3. This goes to show that there is no better advertisement than “pre-viewing” – as long as they keep up the high quality of the show, HBO shouldn’t be too concerned about illegal downloads…

  4. jentario,

Just checked and your last post was responding to something I’d said back in November. I’m honoured.

Were you Coldhands the Just for a while? I ain’t seen that name around there in some months.

And not long ago they were telling us that Blu Ray was dead in the water as a format thanks to TV on demand etc. Seems that people like a product they can actually own and hold, not to mention all the additional extras on the extra disk space.

  6. The quality of the Bluray transfer is superb, definitely worth the extra fiver over the dvd.

  7. Arya Havin’ a Larf?: And not long ago they were telling us that Blu Ray was dead in the water as a format thanks to TV on demand etc. Seems that people like a product they can actually own and hold, not to mention all the additional extras on the extra disk space.

I’ve always discounted the notion that physical media was going away. Not only do people like actually owning a physical product but most of the world has monthly download limits from their ISPs (have to pay to go beyond that). So it is not an option for people living in those countries to download 50 gigs of data, daily.

  8. Jared,

Ah – beautiful work and the usual high standards of GoT. However, this did nothing to quell my fears about the depiction of the SS. Afraid we are going complete cartoony fanboy route. Guess we’ll know soon enough.

  9. Jared,

Interesting that Areo Hotah is fighting a Dornishman in the video. I guess we can assume even more now that we will get some form of Arianne’s Queenmaker plot.
  10. From the video it looks like that Areo is involved in the Sand Snakes fight as well.

Is he trying to get to Jamie’s throat here? I guess it’s him with the sword in left hand. So I guess either Jamie or Bronn will take the role of Arys Oakheart?
  11. Carice van Houten in interview with BVN. Doing my best to translate here, sorry for the English.

“(Season 5) is the wildest yet. If you thought you’d seen it all, like I did, you’d be terribly wrong. More nudity, more deaths, characters coming back from the dead, giants, demons. And I’m up to less good than usual. It’s a mess this year”.

Note: I do believe she said “mess” in jest, though you never know with Carice!

  12. minty,

I don’t think Areo will be involved in that fight (the scene is not at a beach – or did we Jamie somewhere else, I don’t remember all the leaked footage), and yes, the guy he is fighting could be Jame (less likely, I don’t think he would try to take up Areo, having lost his sword hand) or Bronn, but It could also be Dornishman number 23, which I think is more likely. – I think the scene takes place after the arival of Jaime and Bronn on the beach, and after that, there is no reason for them to dress-up anymore.

“(Season 5) is the wildest yet. , characters coming back from the dead….

    Lady Stoneheart or Jon Snuh?
  14. Hoyti Von Totiy,

Lots of dead people being re-animated into wights at Hardhome this season which is probably the most likely reference she’s making (it’s lumped in the Giants and demons).

But one can always dream I suppose.

  15. Hoyti Von Totiy,

My guess would be Jon Snow. If Jon is going to die and be resurrected like most readers assume he will, both events will likely happen at the end of this season or the start of next season. I don’t see it as practical that he’ll die this season and be brought back next season because any filming involving Kit Harrington next season would need to be done in secret to maintain the plot twist and that’s too difficult with a fan base searching for every piece of information that leaks during filming.
  16. I honestly think it’s all our duty to buy the box sets every year.

It’s like a vote in the favor of this show and more shows like it!

    Count my vote!

  17. Axel,

Would you mind giving us the source? We can’t really trust anyone talking about characters coming back from the dead anymore…

  18. Arya Havin’ a Larf?: And not long ago they were telling us that Blu Ray was dead in the water as a format thanks to TV on demand etc. Seems that people like a product they can actually own and hold, not to mention all the additional extras on the extra disk space.

I bought it for the extras. Went out and bought a BR player just to watch my GoT BRs with the History and Lore sections.

    Where’s the second trailer??

  19. Darren:
    Hoyti Von Totiy,

That’s really interesting comment! I didn’t think about this but now I agree.

Maybe this death will happen at the end of episode 9 and we’ll see the resurrection at the end of the season… That makes sense!
