  1. I never got the Catelyn hate, reading unhappy characters in their thoughts is just as good for me.

    It’s boring, pointless chapters I don’t like… Brienne*cough*

  2. Mormont,

Maybe Catelyn chapters are too miserable for some, but there’s something about their melancholy mood I’ve always liked.

As to Brienne, yeah, her first chapters, are really, really slow and the show condensed them in a good way… but her later chapters are amazing

  3. You guys touched on some aspects of GRRM’s writing that I really appreciated–the way that legend doesn’t always reflect the realities of history. Also as you know he took a lot of his ideas from real history and the “first night” is derived from the concept of “prima nocta” and so far as I can tell, that wasn’t a law so much as a priestly practice where the priest would sleep with the bride so the husband would not be “defiled” by getting virgin’s blood on them. And it’s not just a Christian concept, there is a mention of such a thing in the epic of Gilgamesh.

And as you noted Bran’s ability to warg into the another person is limited to only those of a weak mind, like Hodor. The typical person is not so vulnerable.

There is no evidence that the “first night” or “Droit de Seigneur” was ever practiced in real life medieval Europe; and there certainly was never such a law. It’s now believed that this is just a myth made up by critics of the feudal system (Voltaire was one of those who popularized it).

  5. Annara Snow,

One of many such myths. Enlightenment thinkers came up with a lot of bizarre notions about the middle ages, mainly to paint the people who lived back then as rubes compared to how intelligent they were now.

  6. Hey there! This post couldn’t be written any better!

Reading this post reminds me of my previous room mate!
He always kept chatting about this. I will forward this write-up to him.
Fairly certain he will have a good read. Thank you for sharing!
