Emilia Clarke and Joe Naufahu talk season 6 and the new khal

The Dothraki are making a big comeback on Game of Thrones, as Daenerys will discover soon. Emilia Clarke and Joe Naufahu tease season 6 in the latest interviews, with the khaleesi and the new khal on the block discussing their characters.

“He’s Dothraki, so he’s a bit of a brute,” Naufahu says of his new character, Khal Moro, talking to the Hollywood Reporter. “But he’s also quite loyal. He follows traditions very strictly. He’s loyal to the living, and he’s loyal to the dead as well. He’s not as much of a chauvinist as some of the other Dothraki.” Naufahu apparently confirmed to THR that this loyalty to the dead “should have viewers thinking about Drogo” and that “there’s a connection there.”

Moro must be one hell of a warrior- like Drogo, he has the long uncut hair of a great warrior. “My hair was down to my butt,” Naufahu tells THR, “and that’s because [Moro] has never been beat.”

Clarke shares her thoughts on Daenerys’ handling of the Dothraki. She may have once been married to Drogo but to the current khalasar, she is powerless and she’ll find challenges in the new season. But Clarke is confident Daenerys can handle it. “I’m a Khaleesi,” she says to THR. “They can try to step up to this, but they will fail.”

Naufahu describes what it was like, joining Game of Thrones and filming his role for the first time. “I remember being on set for the first time, sitting with my two wives and bloodriders. I kind of had to pinch myself… the Khaleesi was coming up to me!”

Emilia Clarke also talks to Variety this week about the new season, and I mean she really talks it up. The actress says:

I’m going to be surprised if people’s televisions don’t explode, like actually explode or computers have to be pushed aside. It’s huge, it’s ridiculously huge. I remember reading the scripts and being like, “So, everything we’ve ever managed to do in one entire season, we’re like doubling and putting into Season 6?” It’s astonishing. It’s really, truly astonishing how much work has been done out of one season. It’s the biggest, baddest season so far, for sure.

On her bosses David Benioff and D.B. Weiss:

They write so well. They have absolutely spoiled me rotten for reading any other kind of script because they’re so good at what they do. You get spoiled. You don’t get to read that caliber of writing all the time, reading other scripts. It’s so sweet because they always crack each other up. They’re best mates, and you feel it. They really like each other and we all really love them. When you’re doing the biggest battles on television, and killing people and blood and guts and boobs and fires and dragons, the heart of it needs to be two best friends, having the time of their lives, writing a show that people love to watch.

Clarke talks about the show’s Emmy win, the vibe on set, her bosses’ attempts to set her up on dates (!), and much more in the complete interview at Variety.

  1. He’s not the one mocking her or whipping her in any of the teasers. Given that description I think he’ll most likely just take her back to Vaes Dothraki, so she can live there with the other dosh khaleens as a widow of a Khal should do according to their culture. I Could be wrong but in that clip of Dany arriving at VD he doesn’t seem to being rude towards her. Can’t say the same about his bloodriders or other Khals though.

  2. I am getting super hyped bout Khal Moro! 🙂 I wonder if he was actually related to Drogo? Also, pretty hyped about the Dothraki storyline in general, and Drogon’s appearance among them! 😀

In twenty years’ time or so, someone should do a movie on D&D! They seem like such cool and awesome dudes!

  3. I really hope Emilia is right and my TV will explode with amazingness.

But not for real though, then i wont have a TV to watch Game of Thrones on soo….

  4. Connor:

    LOL

  5. I’m a Khaleesi,” she says to THR. “They can try to step up to this, but they will fail.”

    loool I love her

  6. Old Gods and the New, please don’t spend Dany’s entire season walking around with the Dothraki! NOT AGAIN! Been there, done that. I’m sure she’ll be with the Dothraki, just walking and junk, for 5 episodes. Then Drogon and team Daario saves her, they return to Mereen, and liberate it from the Harpies. Look at that, no surprises of any kind, and that’s her entire season 6 story. Joy. Oh, and no Westeros invasion either. Really though, does anybody really want that now? It would be a shock if Dany becomes the villain later, invading a newly-created peaceful Westeros. I would be back onboard with Team Dany then. Until then, I will be skipping ahead when her story’s onscreen.

  7. With Keisha Castle-Hughes not, shall we say, winning universal acclaim for her portrayal of Obara Sand (though that may well be down to the writing rather than her acting), I’m hoping Joe Naufahu will be a big success as the next major Kiwi actor on the show.

  8. I’m really liking the sound of Khal Moro. I thought he’d be abusive and condescending towards Dany but seems I may have been wrong. If he’s gonna be all reasonable and likable, I may want him to survive

    Drogon’s BBQ

and become one of Dany’s generals when she sets off for Westeros.

  9. I predict Moro will become her top general when she comes to Westeros with the Dothraki, and she’ll leave the Unsullied behind in Mereen with Missandei and Greyworm. I always felt like the Unsullied were a temporary army and the Dothraki were always who she would have to win over again.

Nah, it’s her acting. The writing wasn’t on par (unnecessary monologue exposition is unnecessary), but the line delivery and acting was in my eyes her own fault, such as her incredibly forced accent (sorry Keisha).

  11. I hope the Sand Snakes are better this year! (pictures of Dorne jogging my mind on how terrible they were)

  12. A buddy of mine saw the pictures and thought Moro would be Drogo’s brother haha. I really hope not. Cousins maybe. Childhood friends would be cool too.

  13. Kraznys:
A buddy of mine saw the pictures and thought Moro would be Drogo’s brother haha. I really hope not. Cousins maybe. Childhood friends would be cool too.

The quote implies that there is quite a strong connection, so brother might not be too far off. Brother, cousin, BFF. There is something there.

Who does that? I agree her stories are more often than not slow (and yes sometimes that era boring) but I think you are full of shit about skipping scenes.

And I mean that in the nicest way possible.

  15. I like what she has to say about D&D. It’s nice to know that they’re all like a big family. All that love and hard work they put into GoT together really shows I think.

  16. Ser Oromis Locke: Nah, it’s her acting. The writing wasn’t on par (unnecessary monologue exposition is unnecessary), but the line delivery and acting was in my eyes her own fault, such as her incredibly forced accent (sorry Keisha).

The accents are pretty terrible. But writing played a huge role in the suckage of Dorne. The whip as a viable weapon was hard to swallow. It was too showy. Like their costumes. I’m all about jouissance and female sexual empowerment (or at least I’m okay with it) but nipples on a breastplate? And bad poosey and the two lines Obara had (not much of a chance to create, much less redeem her character) I feel like some hornball on drugs cooked up these characters. Maybe they aren’t great actresses, but I don’t think Jennifer Lawrence (or Natalie Portman, fill in your fave young actress here) could have pulled that off.

  17. As every Monty Python fan knows, the moment when your television set explodes is shortly after a penguin appears on top of it. Be warned: Duck and cover!

  18. Hmm, Jon King of the Wildlings and Daeny Khaleesi of the Dothraki, both essentially abandoned for dead, and both using armies that everyone else on a continent views as an enemy.

Any chance for any parallelisms here?

  19. “They write so well. They have absolutely spoiled me rotten for reading any other kind of script because they’re so good at what they do.”

I wonder if she thought than when she read “You want a good girl, but you need the bad pussy”

  20. I must be in the small minority, but the Dothraki don’t excite me, and neither do Dany’s storylines thus far. But yes, if she suddenly is interacting with Theon/Yara or starts to think about Westeros, I’m there for that. But until that, I just honestly don’t care about the taming the Dothraki return or whatever it is.

It’s horrible, but almost all of Dany’s time makes me feel like I’m missing out on action in Westeros (barring Dorne)

  21. Lobo:
“They write so well. They have absolutely spoiled me rotten for reading any other kind of script because they’re so good at what they do.”

I wonder if she thought than when she read “You want a good girl, but you need the bad pussy”

Because that’s ONE line in 60 hours worth of television?

  22. Nadia,

That’s exactly the way I felt about the Wildings storylines before Season 5, and that’s the way I feel about anything Cersei-related for a few seasons now. I also didn’t care for Stannis’ story ever. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when Tywin finally died. We can’t all like the same things. 😉

  23. It’s funny to me a couple of the complaints I’ve heard on more than one occasion are how slowly Dany’s storyline is moving, and Obara’s monologue was bad writing (and delivery, too, but I’m focusing on the writing part of it). The reason I find those funny is at least Dany’s story is moving along more quickly than it does in the books

in the books, Tyrion and Dany haven’t even met, yet

, and Obara’s monologue was taken almost verbatim from the books.

  24. Kay,

Why did you breathe a sigh of relief when Tywin died? Didn’t you like his storylines?
I was heartbroken when he popped his clogs… he was my favourite character! 🙁

  25. Nymeria Warrior Queen,

I thought Dany was terribly written in the books and D&D have done everything they can to speed it up in the show, and it still bores me. I can’t bear to think how many chapters GRRM will write of Dany pooping and being whipped by Dothraki in WOW

  26. The main problem mostly with the SS was that horribly stilted introduction. They were all standing around with their weapons as Ellaria rides in. It reminded me of those meetings where someone new arrives and everyone at the table has to say who they are and what they do. The whole set up had no movement to it. Remember when Talisa was introduced. She was talking to Robb while looking after the wounded and the scene kept moving.

  27. Demon Monkey,

Who does that? I agree her stories are more often than not slow (and yes sometimes that era boring) but I think you are full of shit about skipping scenes.

What does it matter to you? The practice harms no one.

  28. Did the Good Morning America segment air this morning? The one with the GOT actresses? Or did it get postponed?

  29. Love Khaleesi but still find it distracting with her white hair and dark eyebrows. Is there really no way to temporarily lighten them just for each day’s shoot? Seems absurd that they can’t or won’t.

  30. Chimeny: Why did you breathe a sigh of relief when Tywin died? Didn’t you like his storylines?

For me, Tywin was way past his sell-by date by the time he died. Sorry. 🙂 It was a glorious moment for me when Tyrion finally put him down. What poetic justice, as I am sure will become clearer this coming season or next.

  31. Kargaryen:

Yeah it seems they are going to have others play the “Brutish Dothraki” angle but he is the legitimate face and be the character through whom the Dothraki customs are being explained through so the audience gets what is happening and it’s not a simple case of them having “kidnapped her”

  32. well, I have certainly warmed up to the whole Dothraki adventures – up to now I too thought that it is a worthless repetition.
But if Daenerys finds some reasonable Khal… and if they join her and eventually join the war against the WW, that could be worth the trouble of having to hear that horrible tongue again (and watch ridiculusly attractive men).
Although I can’t even begin to imagine the Dothraki in Winterland.
It would be a logistics nightmare just to dress them all up. Maybe she should just let them in their place.

  33. Hmm with what he says about a connection to Drogo wouldn’t it be really weird but kind of cool if this new Khal ends up being their child? Hear me out…As in the blood magic ritual had the ability to implant the spirit of her would be “stallion that mounts the world” into another living person, one who has this drive to find Dany only he doesn’t yet understand why? Btw are the Kahl’s widows “required” to live out their days at this place they’re taking her to by force? Did this Khal Morho have her tracked down? I guess I’m thinking up outlandish possibilities because I’ve been bored with the Dany arc and trying to make it a little more interesting. 🙂

  34. Pigeon,
Oh. My. God. I rarely say such things, given that my opinion on the topic can’t possibly be interesting to anyone but myself, but that’s hot.

  35. Dany with the Dothraki (again) is probably the story line I’m looking forward to the least. I hoped that they would resolve the Meereen situation by the middle of this season, but that’s evidently not the case.

  36. Sou,
I think both the Unsullied and the Dothraki actually will. The war to come won’t be won through numbers, after all, and I hope that Dany will receive some news about it this season (and that this will be what finally propels her to leave for Westeros, as opposed to mundane conquest). It’s past time she did.

  37. Lobo,

People are too hung up on one line, out of thousands. Martin has written multitude of bad lines in his novels and people don’t get so obsessed with them, js.

  38. Ghostmaker:
    Lobo,

wait, are you implying that “Men call me Darkstar, and I am of the night” is not a great line? SHAME!! 😀

btw Moro really seem an unexpected, cool character. Now I wonder who’s playing the ‘Main Asshole Dothraki’…

  39. Mescalinic,

    Or ”fat pink mast”
    Or Arianne’s ”big dark nipples”
    Or ”mirish swamp”
Or ”the more she drank the more she shit and the more she shit the more she drank”
And I could go on and on…..

If only these people would analyze and criticize the books at the same degree they do with the show….

I wonder if they would still find them the holy books they think they are.

  40. Ghostmaker,

It’s this hypocrisy that bothers me the most.

But I’ve learned to avoid and ignore them.
Someone who is so fixated on 5 min of screen-time out of 10 houres, isn’t worth it.

  41. Kamali,

Both armies will definitely have a part to play in untangling the show’s version of the Meereenese Knot.
Presented as Essos’ (or the world’s?) ultimate cavalry and infantry, they seem a perfect match, especially if there ‘s some sort of mutual respect.
Leaving the Unsullied behind to rule Meereen or Slaver’s Bay fits the narrative, but she may yet have to take some of them across the sea, as this piece of lore may be suggesting:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhc283pXcjQ

    Wimsey,

    Absolutely!

  42. I wouldn’t mind if Khal Moro becomes the face of the Dothraki, he seems to be a really good addition to the show.

Slightly OT: Its kinda surprising that we have got no interviews from Pilou Asbaek. He is the biggest addition the coming season and there has been absolutely no pre-season hype surrounding his character! In comparison, I have seen at least a couple of interviews by Naufahu. Did he even attend the premiere? I guess they want to keep his character a surprise?

  43. ghost of winterfell: Its kinda surprising that we have got no interviews from Pilou Asbaek. He is the biggest addition the coming season

That’s a big assumption. We don’t know how big Euron’s role will be in season six.

  44. Luka Nieto: That’s a big assumption. We don’t know how big Euron’s role will be in season six.

and also we don’t know if he will be presented clearly or in a ‘disguised’ form of some sort. just like Ramsay/Boy.. an important character who was pretty much absente from the pre-season interviews

  45. Luka Nieto,

True we don’t. In terms of prominence at least, he is the most important character to be added, isn’t he?
I am looking forward to seeing Euron on screen, I wouldn’t mind reading some interviews before the new season starts. 🙂

  46. OT, but what happened to that Spanish documentary for which we got that 3 minutes teaser? Wasn’t that supposed to air before S6?

  47. Wylie:
OT, but what happened to that Spanish documentary for which we got that 3 minutes teaser? Wasn’t that supposed to air before S6?

I was thinking about the same thing.

  48. Naufahu’s full name:
Joseph Stalin Pereira Naufahu, probably due to one of his grandparents being East German.

A Man of Steel in Daenerys’ revolutionary arc!
She should hope there are no gulags in the Dothraki Sea…
Any associations with the Red God or the Red Star (a five-pointed star reminiscent of the Seven-Pointed one) should be considered purely coincidental

  49. Pigeon: He’s very introverted, and often seems uncomfortable at big events.

But here he is with a kitten:

    https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/e8/e4/d7/e8e4d7db13f078f11386e410b4a406a1.jpg

Oh, so you didn’t think he was drunk? That’s what some were saying at the premier when not-a-fan-girl interviewed him. He did take ages to try to think of the word tutelage and then still didn’t quite get there, but that might not be a word in everyone’s lexicon. I wouldn’t think being introverted would make one a poor speaker. Camera shy, yes, but who would think that actors are camera shy?

  50. I am so excited for the Dothraki and Dany reunion.

I love Emilia. I wish she was my friend 🙂

    And this Khal is hot.

  51. The Sybian,

Those parents must have been hardcore communists, nevermind their nationality. I highly doubt that in East Germany anyone born after the destalinization (and even before tbh) was called Joseph Stalin as a first name. That’s nuts…

  52. Wylie,

Hardcore stalinists, for sure. There are plenty still and the debate about his “reign” sort of ongoing.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_places_named_after_Joseph_Stalin

Judging by this list, just guess how many the individuals must be…
I even recall a story (too long to recount here) of a funny encounter between two friends of mine and an elderly fellow named Stalin (middle name) on two consecutive election Sundays, back here in Greece.
And, since we ‘re here, bear in mind the surge of Khaleesis, Sansas, Aryas etc worldwide as a newborn’s first or middle name… 🙂
    O tempora o mores?

  53. FYI: For those of you on EST in the US there is a great special they are doing on GMA right now. Just showed a new clip of Jamie and the High Sparrow. I don’t remember that scene being released before! For those of you here, turn to ABC and I will try to post a clip when available.

  54. Wylie,

Second that, says an East German. I wouldn’t be surprised if Georgians named their kids after Stalin, many even now still love him, but East Germans? Hardly. There weren’t even many Erichs in my generation, when both the general secretary (Honecker) and the chief spymaster (Mielke) were Erichs, and I haven’t many any Wladimir Iljitschs, either. More like “Ronny” and “Peggy”, even among party member parents 😉

  55. Deesensfan,

So far I’ve only seen Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Lena Headey interview. I can only find clips of the actual interview GMA’s twitter feed: https://twitter.com/GMA?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

I tuned in around 8:30ish EST si I could have missed something. I also can’t find the clip of Jamie and the High Sparrow in the Sept of Baelor. I will keep my eyes peeled tho.

EDIT: the full interview with Nikolaji with the clip is here. I don’t know if it is available outside of the US but I’m sure Youtube will have up soon

  56. Wimsey,

What’s up with people obssessed with parallel between them? I saw certain people using to justify something (we all know what) going forward.

Wouldn’t it be more appropriate term or title Khal of Khals for Daeny? I wouldn’t call him King of the Wildlings to begin with but I see were you going with this.

There is a one difference with Dothraki and Wildlings. Is that one will clearly play a huge role going forward just by the sheer numbers, other one not so much. As we saw in picure a lot of dead Wildlings and it looks even judging by the trailer they numbers will decrease a lot.

Also if spoilers are true Daeny is going to be a big winner much like was Tywin with Tyrells at Blackwater. The whole situation is a parallel. Tyrion trying to control and defend the city from Harpy’s or in KL trying to rule or be Hand of the King and defend city from Baratheons. Eventually he needed to use magic wildfire and probably this time dragons by letting Rhaegal and Viserion go.

Jon on the other hand getting his ass kicked by Boltons until Vale might save him. In all honesty he’s getting his ass kicked a lot.

  57. Name *,

No problem! When the clip was shown I squealed a little bit and I knew I had to share on this community 🙂 Did you watch the clip with Jamie and the High Sparrow? If so, did Jamie actually say

that he killed his cousin? I thought Frankenmountain killed Lancel in the “I choose violence” scene with Cersei? Hmmmm

    .

The HYPE continues! Only 2 days now!!!

  58. Ashley,

We don’t know for sure that what you spoilered actually happens. But in season 2, a Lannister gives Robb Stark a message and Robb puts him in the same cell as Jaime and Jaime kills him in a ruse to escape. That’s what Jaime’s talking about in the clip.

  59. Direwolf Lvr,

My hair is naturally way lighter than my eyebrows (ugh) and I’ve tried lightening them a few times — and honestly it looked even weirder and less natural than leaving them dark despite the major difference in shade with my hair, haha. Maybe Emilia had/has the same issue? I think it just depends on the person and their skin tone/face shape. Then again, I have a feeling she’d be gorgeous no matter what.

  60. Name *,

Oh that makes sense! I completely forgot about that scene back in season 2. Good catch! 🙂

OT: I’m still figuring out when to use the spoiler brackets. I wasn’t really spoiling anything before – rather just trying to interpret a scene(s) that was released on national tv (and obviously adding a bit of speculation). I’m thinking those things should be covered but I’m learning… Slowly learning lol

  61. Re: Clip of Jaime

Haha, I love how when Nik talks about how this religious uprising is a problem they play a completely unrelated clip of Jon vs the White Walker.

The scene itself looks pretty cool. I can’t wait to see Jaime kick some ass again 😀

  62. Joffrey’s Cunt:
Game of Thrones 58- 60 mins!

That’s reassuring. That said, even if the last 2 episodes are 60 minutes long, it will still be a pretty short season. Only longer than season two and (barely) four. And I don’t know how likely it is that the last three episodes will be an hour long…

    Dragonmcmx,

If it’s solely focused on the battle, it may be a short 50 minutes and it wouldn’t feel short, as the episode wouldn’t jump around between storylines.

  63. Luka Nieto: That’s reassuring. That said, even if the last 2 episodes are 60 minutes long, it will still be a pretty short season. Only longer than season two and (barely) four. And I don’t know how likely it is that the last three episodes will be an hour long…

Yeah it is kinda disappointing, since they said this season almost “killed” them lol
I hope they meant quality by that and not time.

  64. ghost of winterfell: He is the biggest addition the coming season and there has been absolutely no pre-season hype surrounding his character!

How do you know? I am curious. Assumptions based on published books? The show is going into unpublished territory.

  65. Deesensfan,

    6×01 – 50
    6×02 – 54
    6×03 – 53
    6×04 – 59
    6×05 – 57
    6×06 – 52
    6×07 – 51
    6×08 – 60

    Available on HBO’s schedule.

As of yet, if the last few episodes follow the season six average runtime, this coming season will be the shortest yet, by quite a margin. If the last two episodes are also around 60 minutes, the season will be slightly longer than season two and four, though shorter than the third, fifth and of course the first.

    Wylie,

Hm. It seems to read 609HD, right? So yeah, it could well be.

  66. Deesensfan,

You’ll probably get your wish for the season finale.

The only episodes with a runtime higher than an hour were 1×01 (62 minutes), 2×10 (64), 3×10 (64), 4×10 (66), and 5×10 (61). So, the show’s pilot episode being the only exception, we can expect season finales to be over an hour, especially when episode nines are completely focused on one storyline (as was the case in the second and fourth seasons) or at least mostly focused on a few (in seasons three and five), which will probably happen again with the big battle.

As for episode nine… Well, if they include the battle in the North and other stuff, it could well be a pretty long episode. If it’s 100% about the battle, it could be relatively short without feeling like it.

  67. Luka Nieto,

    That’s a good point.
It seems to me from the trailers that Ramsay does go to battle, and we see wildlings in a battle. But I don’t see why a whole episode would be dedicated to a battle involving the Boltons, when the Stannis/Ramsay battle was off screen? Unless its against the WW…. I didn’t expect a WW battle in this season.

  68. Deesensfan,

they did the Stannis/Ramasy battle the way they did in Season 5 because a) they needed the budget for Hardhome and b) because they were saving the big winterfell battle for THIS season when it could involve Starks retaking their home..which is a MUCH bigger deal

  69. selena,

Ohhh I would love for Sansa to be involved.

All these people are fighting for Winterfell when it is for the STARKS!!!!!!!

  70. OMG! I love the ‘D&D best friends’ quote from Emilia. She is such a sharp girl and she thinks about the heart of things too. LOVE her. Its almost here!!!! YIPPEE!

  71. Nadia,

I felt that way about a lot of the Wall storyline. The whole “boy becomes a man” thing was dull as can be. I’m glad Jon’s story will be moving forward and I hope Dany’s conquest of the Dothraki will move along faster than Meereen did.

  72. Tarth Vader: The whole “boy becomes a man” thing was dull as can be.

That was the story everywhere, not just the Wall.

selena: they did the Stannis/Ramasy battle the way they did in Season 5 because a) they needed the budget for Hardhome and b) because they were saving the big winterfell battle for THIS season when it could involve Starks retaking their home..which is a MUCH bigger deal

I suspect that the battle is/was anticlimactic in the book, too. (Remember, it’s in the past by the end of Dragons in some plotlines.) Keep in mind that the most prominent protagonist in Stannis’ camp in the books is Theon: and he obviously is not there when the battle ends. So, we probably will not even read how it ends, save perhaps viewed from afar.

  73. ghost of winterfell: Yes, the show is covering a portion of AFFC for this storyline.

Not much: we will get the Kingsmoot, but presumably whatever the Pirates do afterwards will be Winter material. In the books, they were poised to start attacking the south, after all. People had held out hope that the Riverlands material would be from Crows, but the trailers indicate that it is post-Crows events given that Walder Frey has ensconced himself there. Arya’s blindness was in Dragons, but they seem to have flip-flopped her “early release” Winter chapter for that chapter.

    Everything else will be Winter
