It’s time for the 2019 edition of the Watchers on the Wall Awards, celebrating the best of the best for Game of Thrones! After every new season, GoT fans around the world nominate and choose their favorites from the latest season, from performances to dialogue and beyond. It’s up to you all to decide, and it starts now! What were your favorites of the final season?
First up, how does it work? The initial suggestions for nominees in every award category come from you! Fans and run-off voting determine which top five nominees win the final nomination in their category. The final five battle it out in each category, with readers choosing our ultimate season 8 winners. Eventually, after the voting for every category is finished, we will announce the winners in a live Watchers on the Wall Awards video ceremony packed with fun and giveaways!

It’s not always easy to decide who is a lead and who is a supporting actor on GoT, since this can change between seasons and not everyone agrees on which actor/character belongs where. We’ll use your votes as our way of deciding, with factors such as screentime to help, should there be ties.

Next are the guest categories, for the short-term scene-stealers who steal your attention with a limited amount of screen time. Who qualifies for this? Actors and actresses with credited appearances in 1 or 2 episodes in Season 8. *Check the performer’s credits on IMDB if you’re uncertain if they qualify. Anything longer and they’re not a guest, because it’s a short season! People nominated for this who don’t qualify will be dropped into the Best Supporting pool of potential nominations.*

We love to award great individual scenes throughout the season, not just the Best Episode ,so we have several types:
Best Visual Effects Scene: There are many to choose from, so think long and hard. Nominate the scene that you think best demonstrated the show’s Emmy-winning effects. Be specific (not just episode titles or battle names, because battles take up half the episode sometimes) about the scene you’re choosing!
Best Death Scene: There is only one god, and his name is Death. Choose your favorite death scene from the carnage-filled final season.
Funniest Scene: An entire scene that tickles your funny bone the most.
Best Dramatic Scene: the one scene with the greatest dramatic moments of the year- heartbreaking or terrifying or exhilarating. The very best of Game of Thrones.
Action categories can present some difficulty in categorization! So we have two distinct categories- one for smaller-scale fights and skirmishes, and one for the big episode-consuming battles.
Best Fight: smaller-scale fights, 1 on 1, small groups, etc.
Best Battle: large-scale battles
As always, try to be specific! But if you’re not sure which category your choice belongs in, nominate the scene you have in mind anyway and we’ll figure it out where it belongs. It’s all in good fun! In this first stage, we want to get as much input as possible and people hate getting to the final stage and realizing their favorite scene or actor was never even nominated for something because no one remembered it/them.

The Rules & Process
Phase 1- Initial Gathering of Nominees: Please submit your nominees ONLY in the Comments section below. Please make your nominations with the categories they’re for clearly labeled in Comments.
You may use more than one post, as many as you need, or if you decide to add more nominations at a later time, that’s fine. You may nominate more than one performer or scene for an award in this initial submission-gathering process!
People have very different opinions on whether an actor is supporting or lead, so it’s important to label your nominations carefully! Ultimately, a performer can win a best actor/supporting nomination in only one category, and it will be in the one in which they gained the most votes. Using the submission ballots, storylines and season 8 screen time as a guide, the determination of placing a performer into lead versus supporting will ultimately be at WotW’s discretion.
Phase 2- First round Preliminary Poll: After everyone has posted their nomination submissions, the pool of info will be sorted into categories by the WotW staff. Each category will then have a run-off poll. The top five vote-getters in each category win the nominations.
There may be some categories where they aren’t five noms to begin with. They’ll skip this round and go right to phase 3.
Phase 3- Final Round Voting: A second round of polls will determine the winner of each finalized category.
The winners of the Watchers on the Wall Awards will be announced all at once in a live party, on a date to be determined in the near future!
We’ll keep these comments open until Monday, August 12th, at 12PM Eastern Time to accept initial nominations. We’ll count up and sort the votes, and soon after that, we’ll start the preliminary voting polls.

Best Dramatic scene: For me this is also in my top 3 of the whole saga, maybe even first place. Dany burning KL to the ground while we follow Arya. And the scene for me that stood out was Arya with the woman and her child and the knighting of Brienne.

I’m trying to pick my favorite death scene now. Honestly, there really aren’t very many to choose from that I particularly liked, so I might go with Bella for that one!
I want to pick Theon’s death out of respect for Alfie Allen, who did such a great job with Theon throughout the years, but I kind of found that scene underwhelming.
It was basically like:
Bran – “Ok, thanks for everything Theon. You can go and die now, even though Arya is about 5 seconds away from killing the NK”.

I have been a lurker here at WoTW since before Jon’s “death” in season 5. I have watched every episode of every season-except season 8- at least ten times, maybe more. I was so disappointed with the ending for Dany (my favorite ever since reading the books about three years before the show started, though I love most all of them) and so heartbroken, that I haven’t been able to rewatch ANY of season 8. I just couldn’t bear it. I was just so heartsick over Dany’s abrupt change and character assassination. I was finally ready to say goodbye to the Seven Kingdoms for good and all. But reading all of these favorite moments, you guys have actually made me want to watch Season 8 again. This fandom really is the best.

I need to think about the nominations a little longer but I’m cross-posting something I put in reply to one of your comments on the Jaime redemption arc (or not) thread – I’m not sure if anyone is reading that thread anymore. It’s to do with sign language rather than the subject matter of the thread per se.
I know British Sign Language to a fairly basic level. A few years ago I obtained Level 2 in the Open College qualification (though Signature the organisation that oversees BSL doesn’t recognise the Open College qualifications for working with D/deaf people) – it was the one I could find a course for in my hometown though. I did manage to get the Level One in ABC (I said in ASL in my original post which was wrong – the examination board is ABC) which is recognised by Signature. It sounds as if your accomplishment in ASL in more advanced than mine in BSL. I’m retired though so I’m not really thinking of looking for another career at this stage in my life. Languages are supposed to exercise the part of the brain related to memory so I hope it will help my grey matter stay on point. As an aside, do you know anything about the sign language that Native Americans use? It’s an interesting subject but here in the UK it’s not something I know a lot about.

Oh, I am pretty rusty; can teach using it with kids, but fall apart when trying to carry on a conversation with adults! What I find fascinating is that like oral languages, sign language is not universal. the signs used are influenced by proximity to each other so ASL is vastly different from British sign, and Mexican sign has similaritys with ASL. If you are interested in learning BSL, I’d encourage yuo to take a class or two just for fun. As for Native American signs, when French Sign Language was introduced in the late 1700 in America it borrowed from many other sources : signs already used in the deaf community, Native American signs sort of got into the mix. Some considerations about the episodes.
Winterfell was a bit underwhelming, but not for the lack of facts or events, but because it was not emotional enough.
A Knight of the Seven kingdoms had all the emotional stuff the first episode lacked. I like it immediately.
The long night was a rollercoaster and surprising at the end. But I watched it when it came out and it was difficult to see.
The last of the Starks felt like an usual Game of Thrones episode with the dangerous stuff at the end and the momentum at the end.
The Bells was breathtaking. Beautifully crafted and directed. And gut-wrenching. The only time my friend cried in this season was when Jaime and Cersei died. And I thought I would be the one needing to be consoled. Just saying.
The Iron Throne was perfect in the first part and suffers because of the neat separation between the two parts. But after many rewatches, I like it more and more.

Best New Costume: Dany’s mad queen attire from the Bells. Reminded me of the Hydra get up when I look back actually. A bit of the First Order too. I guess it is all that black with red accent/logo.
All-Around Best Quote: for me, it’s the back and forth that saves the world and one of the best written line exchanges that the TV adaptation had non book related:
“What do we say to the God of Death? Not today.”

Best Speech: the knight oath delivered by NWC’s Jaime in the second ep has the power of making me want to stand up and applaud every time I see that scene. Sure it’s not an original speech to inspire large masses or armies, just a regular run of the mill oath, but it’s better than anything else in season 8 for me.
Best Visual Effects Scene: Drogon shaking the snow when Jon passes by to kill Dany or Drogon unfolding his wings behind Dany so it looks like she’s the real dragon.
Best Death Scene: Melisandre. In fact it’s probably my favorite death scene in the whole series.
Funniest Scene: everything Tormund really whether is his blue eyes or him measuring his dick against Jaime’s in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms ep.
Best Dramatic Scene: tie between these two
– the Bells Dany goes beserk after the Bells rung with Jon helpless seeing his Northmen become what Jorah said. ”There’s a beast in every man, and it stirs when you put a sword in his hand.”

Best Fight: Cleganebowl, though if it I could consider Ayra vs the NK an actual fight vs an assassination strike I would probably choose that one.
